Five common pitfalls with PC solid sheets that many people regret using later

PC sheets may look identical, but why are there such significant differences in performance? Many customers have a common observation when purchasing PC solid sheets: they look similar, have similar transparency, but the prices differ considerably. Initially, many tend to choose the cheaper option, thinking that since they are just "sheet materials," there shouldn't be much difference. However, after a period of actual use, problems begin to appear: yellowing, brittleness, cracking, and even replacement shortly after installation. These problems are not accidental; they are problems that were already present during the material selection stage.

From practical engineering experience, the most common problems with PC solid sheets are basically concentrated in the following aspects.

The first easily overlooked issue is the true effectiveness of the UV layer

Many sheets are labeled "UV-protected," but what truly determines durability isn't the presence of the UV layer, but rather how it's applied.

If it's simply an added UV component or a surface coating, it's prone to failure under prolonged sun exposure, eventually manifesting as yellowing, decreased light transmittance, and even brittleness. In outdoor projects, this difference often isn't apparent in the first few months, but rather gradually becomes evident over one or two years.

In some long-term outdoor projects that Guoweixing has participated in, they typically prioritize using PC endurance boards with a UV co-extrusion structure. This allows the UV-resistant layer to be integrally molded with the board itself, resulting in more stable performance during use.

The second common problem is that the thickness "looks the same" but is actually different

Thickness is a crucial factor for many customers when judging prices, but it's also the most easily misunderstood parameter. Some boards are labeled as 3mm, but the actual thickness may vary. In short-term use, this difference may not be noticeable, but under stress or during long-term use, it will directly affect the strength and stability of the board.

In engineering projects, this deviation often leads to a chain reaction, such as deformation, unstable installation, and even affecting the overall structure. Therefore, instead of just looking at the nominal specifications, it's better to focus on the actual thickness and whether the manufacturer has stable production control capabilities.

Thirdly, there's the long-term impact of raw material differences

The performance of PC solid sheets largely depends on their raw materials. Sheets produced using virgin materials exhibit more stable transparency, toughness, and weather resistance; while those made with recycled or mixed materials may not be easily distinguishable visually, they are more prone to aging and brittleness during use. This difference is often not apparent at the time of purchase but gradually becomes apparent after a period of use.

From an industry perspective, both established manufacturers like Shanghai Huili and other companies with large-scale production capabilities are more stringent in their raw material selection, which is a significant reason for the stability of their products.

Fourth, the importance of processing and installation details is underestimated

Even if the sheet itself is fine, improper processing and installation can still affect the final result. For example, if no space is provided for thermal expansion and contraction during drilling, the sheet is prone to stress during temperature changes, which may lead to cracking over time. During cutting, rough edge finishing will also affect aesthetics and lifespan. In some projects, the problem is not with the material itself, but with the processing details.

Therefore, manufacturers with processing experience are often better able to guarantee the stability of the boards in actual use.

The fifth problem is focusing solely on price while ignoring overall operating costs

This is the most common and impactful misconception. During the procurement phase, price is often the most direct comparison standard, but focusing only on initial costs and ignoring the lifespan can easily lead to incorrect choices.

A cheaper material that needs replacement after two or three years actually results in higher long-term costs; conversely, a stable material, while requiring slightly higher initial investment, reduces maintenance and replacement frequency.

In many engineering projects, the core of material selection is not "which is cheaper," but "which is more stable."

Choosing the right sheet material is essentially about avoiding future problems

Polycarbonate sheets are a mature material, but in practical applications, differences in performance often stem from details.

In actual projects, manufacturers like Guoweixing, with their production and engineering experience, consider the usage environment during the selection phase, matching the sheet structure and parameters to reduce uncertainties during later use. This application-oriented approach is precisely what more and more projects are valuing when selecting materials.

If your project has certain requirements for durability or stability, spending more time early on determining the material source and process details can usually avoid many unnecessary costs and risks later on.
