High-Temperature Performance Test of Polycarbonate Solid Sheets

2mm vs 3mm at 120°C for 3 Hours — Evaluating sheet deformation and dimensional stability under sustained heat exposure[cite: 1].

High-Temperature Performance Test of Polycarbonate Solid Sheets 1

Polycarbonate solid sheets are used in industrial protection, architectural glazing, equipment viewing windows, and other applications where they may be exposed to elevated temperatures. In addition to the properties of the material itself, sheet thickness is an important factor influencing performance in service.

Guoweixing recently conducted a three-hour test at 120°C using 2 mm and 3 mm polycarbonate solid sheets under identical conditions. Changes in the shape of each sample were recorded at specified intervals to assess their response to prolonged heat exposure.

Test Conditions

For this test, 2 mm and 3 mm polycarbonate solid sheet samples were placed together in a high-temperature oven and exposed to 120°C for three hours. Their condition was documented after one hour and again after three hours.

Sample thickness 2 mm and 3 mm
Test temperature 120°C
Equipment High-temperature oven

Observations Sheet appearance and deformation

Test Results

The two sheet thicknesses responded differently during exposure to 120°C. After one hour, the 2 mm sheet had begun to show noticeable deformation and had lost its original shape. In contrast, no obvious deformation was observed in the 3 mm sheet, which remained relatively stable.

The samples remained at 120°C until the three-hour mark, when the oven was switched off and the sheets were removed. By then, deformation of the 2 mm sheet had become substantially more pronounced, resulting in a severe change in shape. The 3 mm sheet still showed no visible deformation after removal.

Sample Thickness After 1 Hour After 3 Hours
2 mm polycarbonate solid sheet Noticeable deformation began Severe deformation
3 mm polycarbonate solid sheet No obvious change observed No obvious change observed

The results demonstrate a clear difference in deformation behavior between the 2 mm and 3 mm sheets under the same 120°C exposure conditions and test duration.

Test Summary

Polycarbonate is a thermoplastic engineering material whose properties are influenced by temperature. As temperature rises, sheet stiffness and resistance to deformation may change.

Both samples were tested at the same temperature, for the same duration, and under the same environmental conditions; sheet thickness was the variable. The 2 mm sample deformed earlier, with deformation becoming more severe as heating continued. No obvious deformation was observed in the 3 mm sample at the end of the three-hour test.

These observations suggest that sheet thickness can affect dimensional stability under certain high-temperature conditions. However, actual performance depends on more than thickness alone. Material properties, mechanical loads, supporting structures, span, heating method, and exposure duration also play important roles.

Polycarbonate solid sheets intended for high-temperature applications should therefore be evaluated against the specific service conditions rather than selected on thickness alone.

Application Considerations

For architectural glazing, machinery guards, industrial viewing windows, and other applications exposed to sustained heat sources, operating temperature is a key consideration when selecting sheet specifications.

Where elevated temperatures are expected over extended periods, design decisions should account not only for the material properties of the polycarbonate sheet but also for its thickness, fixing method, structural span, and loading conditions.

Sample testing under representative service conditions is particularly advisable when operating temperatures approach the material’s recommended limits. A static laboratory heat test cannot fully replicate sustained loads, localized heat sources, day–night temperature fluctuations, or structural constraints encountered in real installations.

Sheet thickness should also be chosen according to the requirements of the application. Thicker sheets generally offer greater overall stiffness, but increasing thickness is not automatically necessary for every high-temperature application. An appropriate specification balances safety, structural requirements, operating conditions, and cost.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What were the results of the 120°C test?

Sheet thickness can affect overall stiffness and resistance to deformation. After three hours at 120°C, the 2 mm sheet showed severe deformation, while the 3 mm sheet remained relatively stable, with no obvious change observed.

2. What is the typical service temperature range of polycarbonate solid sheets?

Under typical conditions, polycarbonate solid sheets of conventional thicknesses can be used within a temperature range of −30°C to 120°C without readily showing obvious deformation or deterioration in quality. Actual performance depends on sheet thickness, structural loading, and the operating environment.

3. Does a thicker polycarbonate solid sheet always perform better at high temperatures?

Not necessarily. Thickness affects dimensional stability, but material quality, loading conditions, support structure, span, and exposure duration also influence performance.

4. How should sheet thickness be selected for high-temperature applications?

Consider the actual operating temperature, exposure duration, span, support arrangement, and loading conditions. Thickness should not be the sole selection criterion.

5. Is sample testing recommended before using polycarbonate sheets in high-temperature applications?

Yes. For applications involving prolonged heat exposure, localized heat sources, or specialized industrial environments, test samples under representative conditions before finalizing the sheet specification.
