Polycarbonate Sheet Performance: Key Factors to Consider

Table of Contents

magine a roof that looks great when it's first installed. But after just two summers, the panels are yellow and some have cracked around the screw holes.Good performance in polycarbonate sheets usually depends on five things: the quality of the resin, protection from UV light, how much light passes through, the thickness, and how well it handles heat expansion. Also, the fire safety rating needs to match your local requirements. All these features can be checked before you buy, and it's much harder to fix them once the sheets are already in place. Here's what to look for and what documents to ask for.

What Happens When a Polycarbonate Sheet Underperforms

Most sheet problems happen gradually. The roof seems fine when it's first put up, but then people start complaining after one or two seasons. Common issues include yellowing, a cloudy look, cracks around the screws, and leaks at the joints. For distributors and contractors, the sheets themselves aren't usually the biggest cost. The real expense comes from taking the roof down, bringing in new sheets, and the customer who stops contacting you.

Light transmission can go down over time because of scratches and UV yellowing. If thermal expansion isn't taken into account, the sheet can bend, twist, and crack, which makes it last shorter.

The market is also getting more competitive. Some estimates say that global sheet sales in 2025 could be between $2.27 billion and $3.84 billion, depending on how each company defines the market. More suppliers mean a bigger difference in quality, which is why checking a few things before you order is important.

Our factory often hears the same story from customers who come to us after a bad experience elsewhere. A carport roof is built, and within two summers, some panels turn yellow and cracks appear around the screw holes. When we look into it, the cause is usually simple: the UV-protected side was installed facing in, or the holes for the screws were drilled without space for expansion.

Fortunately, there is a relatively limited number of factors that are the source of most problems associated with polycarbonate sheets and should be assessed in advance of their use. These factors include the most important characteristics that ensure the efficiency of the sheets' use.

Resin Quality: Where Good Performance Starts

First of all, the sheets start with a specific resin whose composition affects the clarity of the sheet, its strength and durability during use. New resins lead to higher consistency in the batches but the mixing and recycling of materials may result in cloudiness, discoloration and even the formation of weak spots within several years.

The price of the resin is also an important aspect because of the dependence of sheet manufacturing on the petrochemical origin of resin such as bisphenol A. The fluctuations of the price may lead to the usage of alternative raw materials by some manufacturers to reduce costs.

In order to assess the quality, you need to ask three important questions: what type of the resin is used, is the sheet made of new materials and was the sheet manufactured according to some standards.

UV Protection: The Factor Behind Outdoor Lifespan

Despite the high durability, polycarbonate is prone to degradation under the influence of sunlight. Without UV protection, polycarbonate sheets will become yellowed, cracked, brittle, and incapable of resisting damage. This is the main reason to use polycarbonate sheets with UV protection for various applications, including roofs, greenhouses, and carports.

UV protection of most polycarbonate sheets sold for outdoor use is applied in the form of a thin layer to one or two sides of the product. As the layer is very thin, its protective properties will be activated only if the sheet is oriented with the protected side facing the sun. Instructions typically require installation with the UV protection side directed toward the sunlight and removal of the protective film after the installation. If a polycarbonate sheet is installed incorrectly, it may quickly degrade.

UV protection reliability is based on the warranty that is issued along with it; therefore, the details of the warranty need to be read carefully.Polycarbonate warranties typically run from 10 to 15 years, and 10 years of that are for color changes such as yellowing.Typical warranty requirement would be the limit of color change that the warranty offers. This is usually mentioned by the manufactures, and helps to differentiate products. A specific company mentions that they offer a warranty allowing a yellowness change of ΔYI 2 while a typical multiwall sheet warranty allows ΔYI 10.It can be seen that the smaller the ΔYI value, the more protection against color change is offered; therefore, two similar products under the 10-year warranty would have a different appearance after those 10 years.A typical brochure would state weatherability testing up to 8,000 hours.

When you compare quotes for UV-protected polycarbonate sheets, ask for four things: which sides have the UV layer, how many hours of weathering tests were done and which standard they followed, the yellowness limit in the warranty, and the light-loss limit.

Light Transmission and Thickness: Finding the Right Balance

Light transmittance is a measure of how much natural light gets through the material.Solid polycarbonate panels by SABIC have a light transmittance from 84 to 87%.In hollow panels less light is transmitted.Twin-wall panels transmit up to 83% of light, and single-wall panels – 94%, according to the University of Arkansas.Another producer claims 81% of light transmission for twin-wall panels, and 65% for five-wall.

However, less light transmission does not necessarily mean the product quality is lower. Thicker multiwall panels distribute the light better and provide good insulation capacity.Multiplying layers increases R-value as well, for example 1.54 for 6 mm twin-wall panel, and up to 3.2 for 16 mm five-wall.Therefore, this parameter depends on requirements of the particular project – need for light or insulation.Multipanel polycarbonate sheets are popular materials in applications where insulation is needed, like greenhouses and roofs, while solid sheets are preferred in skylights, barriers, and glazing.

Thickness of the polycarbonate sheet determines how long span will be, stiffness and deflection of the panel as well as feel of the panel under maintenance, when walking on it.Being too thin and with too much spacing between fixings, the sheet can bend and become loose from fixing points. On the other hand, thick sheet will increase the load and cost.Discuss your wind and snow loads with the supplier to get the appropriate span chart.

Heat Expansion: Leave Room to Move

The coefficient of thermal expansion of polycarbonate is higher compared to glass and metal. It means that polycarbonate expands to a greater extent, and its expansion rate is 0.065 millimeters per meter of length and per degree of increase in temperature. The formula to calculate the extent of expansion is the multiplication of length, the temperature increase and the expansion coefficient. For example, a 6-meter sheet with a temperature increase of 60° C will expand by about 23 millimeters (6 × 60 × 0.065). Dark or tinted sheets absorb more heat; hence, they expand even further.

Tight fastening of polycarbonate sheeting leads to the development of stress along the edge and on holes that may result in bending, warping or cracking. When working with polycarbonate roof sheets, it is necessary to leave a small space along the edges, drill holes larger than the screws and apply sealants and cleaners suitable for polycarbonate.

Fire Rating: Know What the Label Means in Your Market

As the fire regulations vary by country, the name in the datasheet becomes crucial. For example, the products for use in Europe have to pass the test according to the EN 13501-1.The clear solid polycarbonate sheets have the classification of B-s1,d0 according to the reports issued by the certified laboratories. The rating indicates that the material does not burn easily, releases low amounts of smoke, and does not release many, or any, flaming droplets. In the United States, the plastic materials are mostly evaluated according to UL 94.

What to Ask a Polycarbonate Sheet Supplier

A short check before the first order can save a lot of trouble.

Step 1: Ask for documents. Request test reports for the standards your market uses, quality and material certificates with valid dates, and the written warranty with its yellowing and light-loss limits.

Step 2: Test a sample. Confirm which face carries the UV film, check for haze, bubbles or uneven thickness, and compare thickness and weight with the datasheet. If time allows, leave a piece outdoors for a few weeks and compare it with the original.

Step 3: Confirm details in writing. Agree on thickness tolerance, size, color, UV face, export packing and lead time before payment.
