The hail resistance performance of solid polycarbonate sheets depends on multiple factors, including sheet thickness, hailstone diameter, impact height or velocity, as well as material formulation and service conditions. Based on ASTM impact testing standards, thicker sheets generally provide higher impact resistance and better protection against severe hail events.
Typical performance ranges can be summarized as follows:
- 4mm sheets: Suitable for resisting standard hailstones with a diameter of up to 20mm and impact from a drop height of up to 2 meters. Impact resistance is approximately 15–20 kJ/m².
- 6mm sheets: Designed to withstand medium to large hailstones up to 30mm in diameter with impact heights around 3 meters, with impact strength of about 25–30 kJ/m².
- 8–10mm sheets: Capable of resisting strong hail conditions with hailstone diameters up to 40mm and impact heights up to 5 meters, with impact resistance of approximately 35–45 kJ/m².
